6 Secrets For Writing Powerful Product Descriptions For Your Organic Beauty Products Business (2023)

Shopify agrees that most product descriptions are terrible, to say the least.

Also, an extensive study was conducted on ecommerce and the results were astonishing – a whooping 20% of failed purchases is because of poorly written product descriptions.

Are you wondering why your organic beauty products aren’t selling well on online platforms? Maybe you’ve perfected your formulations and have many positive reviews glittering on your profile.

Sure, these things have their place, we talk about them frequently on our exclusive Facebook group (have you joined yet?)

If you don’t optimize your product descriptions, you stand to leave thousands of dollars on the table for your competition to snatch up.

The good thing is that you don’t have to completely rewrite your existing descriptions, you don’t need to hire a marketer or copywriter, nor do you have to rebuild your entire website! (Phew!)

So how can you tell if your product description is chasing away potential customers?

  • You don’t speak directly to your ideal buyer
  • You talk too much about your products ingredients and formulations
  • You don’t use your unique style of speaking
  • Your points are in chunky paragraphs

Here are some 6 secrets I learnt on how to guarantee a sell-out with your product descriptions in 2023:

Tip #1 : Focus On Speaking To Your Ideal Customer Only.

If you’re thinking about how to start an organic beauty products business, I need you to understand one crucial point;

Your products aren’t for everyone – the sooner you accept this, the better.

Organic skincare products are generally for women (men, too) who love to take care of their bodies, pamper themselves, and are conscious of the ingredients they put on their bodies.

They’re always looking to experiment with new scents and colors. Keeping this in mind, write about problems and situations only they can relate to.

Here are some questions you should answer to get a better idea of what we’re saying here:

  • Who’s life can be impacted most by my product?
  • What pain points will my product address for them?
  • What is my customer’s deepest desire?
  • What likely objections should I address?
  • Which phrases or words do they use when describing a product they love?

Tip #2 : Entice Your Customer With The Benefits Of Your Products.

I understand, you can get excited about your product’s features, ingredients and quality formulation.

However, talking too much about these things is sure to lead money away from you and your business.

The issue is this – your customer doesn’t want to hear this. They want to know what’s in it for them.

I’m aware there are laws that forbid us DIY skincare entrepreneurs from making any medical claims about our products. That’s not what I’m talking about.

Instead, try doing this:

  • Reassure them that their aspirations and hopes are valid.
  • Highlight and magnify the problems they are going through.
  • Use vivid language to describe what they will feel when using your product.
  • Help them visualize how their life can change if they use your product.

Tip #3 : Appeal To Your Customer’s Imagination.

I’ve seen some of y’alls creations and, can I say, you guys are killing it! I especially love the products that look irresistibly delicious and utterly edible.

You should use language that will make your customer imagine what it will be like to hold and use your product.

Just talk about the sensory appeal your product has! (sight, sounds, smells, touch)

Such words are guaranteed to get the point home and make your customer click “add to cart” faster than you can say lavender scented body butter.

Use phrases like sweet vanilla scent, bright pink color, gentle but firm exfoliating beads, smooth velvety lather, etc.

Here are some words proven to encourage more sales from customers who are on the fence about your products:

Tip #4 : Use Your Brand’s Unique Tone Of Voice.

Your voice will never change but the tone of it varies based on who you’re talking to.

I have a 2-year old daughter and I noticed that when I speak to her, my tone changes if she’s happy, playful, upset or naughty.

I always try to be kind and respectful, but different situations make my tone vary so I can make her understand what I’m trying to say.

Here’s the thing about using tone of voice in your product descriptions – you can’t copy or mimic anyone else’s tone. Your tone is ever and only unique to you alone.

To find your tone, write how you speak. Be persuasive, but write the way you would talk to a friend, or a face-to-face visitor.

Tip #5 : Make The Features Easy To Read By Using Bullet Points.

I didn’t said you should never talk about your product’s ingredients or unique formulation. Just don’t do it too much, and do it the right way.

Let me ask you something, did you read this entire article word-for-word or are you skimming through just to get the important points? Exactly!

Most times, your customers will shy away if they see a chunky paragraph talking about stuff that is boring to them.

However, they still want to understand if the ingredients are right for their skin, if the formulation is worth the buy and other important features.

Make their work easier by using bullet points with short, straight-to-the-point descriptions.

Tip #6 : Use Plenty Of Images & Videos.

Most customers looking to buy organic skincare products online desire to look at photos and videos more than anything.

It’s part of the whole pamper experience.

Pamper your customer with high-quality photos and videos of your products. When you make your own skincare line, ensure you have a collection of 10+ photos and videos for each product.

Have you read the article where I show you how to take gorgeous photos of your products with your phone alone?

In this craft of ours, it’s better to show than tell. A great example is the images and designs by DIY beauty brand ASHtopia.
